John Abramson, in his book Overdo$ed America, makes the following claim: that to prevent or greatly reduce the chances of experiencing nearly all of the top killers in the Western world, one need only follow the 7 guidelines given on pages 238-9. Take a moment and look at this list; then come back to this page. Topic: The “prescriptions” on Abramson’s list are probably already known to you and were likely known to you and most everybody else before he wrote his book (eat right, don’t smoke, exercise, etc.). So what gives? Who/what is to blame for America’s ever-burgeoning lifestyle-related health crises? Our incredibly high heart disease and type II diabetes rates, cancer diagnoses, the obesity epidemic, and on and on? What is the real problem as you see it, and what is the solution? (You have already begun answering these questions in your Response Paper 2/Discussion posts, and you may integrate some of that research into this final essay.) In your answer (your analysis and your argument), you should make meaningful references to Abramson’s text to show that you understand his argument(s). In addition, in your argument, bring in at least two or three other voices (reliable secondary sources) to help you make the case of what really ails Westerners and how to solve the problem—or why so far we have been unable to. Remember that all claims outside of common knowledge must be cited. As you can see, it is not enough to tell people what they should and shouldn’t do (they usually already know but do not do it, for some reason). Get to the bottom of this. Due Date Your essay is due December 9, by **noon** (12pm), as a Word document or PDF only and on Canvas only. Because of final grade deadlines, late papers will not be accepted for this assignment.
